Female genital mutilation is not addressed by a dedicated FGM-specific statute in Romania; instead, Article 306 of the Romanian Penal Code — a general provision punishing conduct that "severely endangers, through measures or treatments of any type, the physical, intellectual or moral development of a minor" — can be applied to FGM cases. This is a notably more indirect legal framework than countries with explicit FGM statutes, and is a wholly separate matter from male circumcision, which has no equivalent Romanian provision at all.
