However, in the current state of Polish law, performing infant circumcision technically meets the elements of the criminal offence of causing bodily injury under the Polish Penal Code — a legal tension present but, in practice, not enforced against religious or medically-indicated circumcision. This ambiguity is similar in kind to legal debates that have occurred elsewhere in Europe (e.g. Sweden, Iceland) without resulting in a specific prohibitory or permissive statute. Female genital mutilation is a separate matter and must not be conflated with male circumcision.
