Research note: Switzerland DEEP_BUILT 2026-07-04. Morris 2016/erratum PMC4820865: 5.9% (highest of a 5-country European batch: pt 0.61%, ro 0.34%, hu 0.78%, rs 3.71%, ch 5.9%); causal Jewish/Muslim-pop framing REFUTED 0-3, not asserted. DISTINCTIVE: 2012 post-Cologne-ruling Swiss controversy β Zurich + St. Gallen children's hospitals imposed circumcision moratoriums; 20min.ch poll (~8,000 SELF-SELECTED respondents, NOT representative β 64% wanted a religious-circumcision ban, but 93% Muslim/75% Jewish respondents opposed); Fribourg law professor Marcel Niggli publicly argued the German ruling had no Swiss legal bearing β genuine documented division among Swiss legal scholars, NO statute resulted. FGM made a specific federal offence same year (2012, Art. 124 Criminal Code) β coincidental timing, entirely separate legal track, NOT conflated. WHO HQ in Geneva = institutional-geography footnote only, no bearing on Swiss domestic practice/policy. HIV ~0.21% (2022). UNREGULATED (unsettled, not merely silent β genuine 2012 legal debate documented). NOT VMMC priority. 0 verified incidents (honest gap). Sources #1190-1197.

Legal status
UnregulatedNo Swiss federal or cantonal statute specifically governs non-therapeutic male circumcision. In 2012, following Germany's Cologne district court ruling, two Swiss children's hospitals (Zurich and St. Gallen) imposed temporary circumcision moratoriums, and Swiss legal scholars publicly disagreed on whether the German ruling had any bearing on Swiss law β a genuine, documented division that never resolved into a specific Swiss statute in either direction. Female genital mutilation has been a specific federal criminal offence in Switzerland since 2012 (Article 124 of the Swiss Criminal Code) β a wholly separate legal framework from the unsettled, unlegislated status of male circumcision, and the two must not be conflated.
